The route proposed here takes 2.25 days to Pipiriki, stopping at the Rivertime Lodge, then Jerusalem, followed by an early morning hike to Pipiriki on day three. The track branches again after about 2.5 km, with a track west to Cape Maria van Diemen. The track takes you down into a gully and over a bridge and onto the historic reserve that includes the site of Kororipo Pā. You begin on SH4, which is a fairly busy road, though begins with parkland on the river side of the road. Adjacent to the Mercer Motel is a tavern called Podge’s Place with meals and refreshments. This option also stays closer to the TA trail in that you can continue walking north from the landing, whereas it seems most people going SoBo don’t actually do the official route of walking to the, Avoiding the Whanganui River altogether by walking up through the Ruahines, Kawekas and Kaimanawas could be an alternative. If you do stay on this (and it may provide welcome respite from the wind and sun on the beach), you can take a turn-off left just after the Koitiata Stream (not the turn before) and follow a track through the pines and macrocarpas that more or less runs parallel to the gas line but eventually affords access to the beach. About 1 km further on you will need to cross the Waikare River that joins the Papakauri. The nearest main town is Kaitaia, 100 km to the south. Stay on SH1 going west and north-west. Follow the path inland along the northern bank of the Kerikeri River on the Kerikeri Walkway. Keep left when the track splits about 1 km after a farm house to avoid crossing over onto the other side of the stream. At the top by a carpark, turn right onto the Kauri Mountain Track. You then want to be on the Kororipo Pā Track (marked with TA signs), which takes you to Kerikeri Rd and at its end the historic Stone Store at the water’s edge. It is made up of a mixture of older tracks and walkways, new tracks, and link sections alongside roads. It then becomes Forestry Rd. Take care drinking from streams, both here and elsewhere in the Tongaririo National Park, as some are heavily mineralised and contain toxic metals from volcanic sources. Watch for the road sloping uphill back in the direction you’ve been walking. Whatever the case, the trail heads north along the beach to Marsden Point. But you could do it in two days by staying at Otumaire campsite (42 km from Whanganui) and then Pipiriki camp ground (38 km from Otumaire). Note that there can be forestry operations on Cullen Rd, on weekdays and sometimes Saturday. The TA map shows this veering right after 1.3 km and your route left onto the beach, but the point is easy to miss. Otherwise, turn left over a bridge onto McAuslin Rd. At the junction with Skyline Rd up Te Puke Rd a few metres is an inconspicuous marker of where the idea of the Te Araroa Trail first took off. I’d been ambivalent about TA, Te Araroa, who needs to walk 70 km through Auckland, bash away through gorse or down long km of farm trails up in the North Island? Pipiriki is where you need to catch your jetboat to Mangapurua Landing (the Bridge to Nowhere is a short walk from here and is what most jetboat tours advertise).
